The ornamental comb is a feminine accessory for the hair that has a convex form and several spikes that are fitted onto the bun. In the past, it was made from tortoiseshell proceeding to the conch of the turtle little by little. With time and the gradual disappearing of the turtles which the conch was made of, the ornamental combs of tortoiseshell were replaced with others synthetic materials, in order to avoid the entire extinction of this species.
The Conservationists´criteria have favored the use of different materials, between them the celluloid, that imitates perfectly both the aspect and texture of the authentic tortoiseshell and allows to adorn these combs with thin and thick openwork. The origin of the ornamental comb goes back to the 19th century, and nowadays, is still used in some celebrations like weddings, processions during the Holy Week or bullfights.
The ornamental comb is the principal accessory of the mantilla that became fashionable during last century. The mantilla constitutes a traditional accessory for the traditional Spanish outfit. Also it is a constitutive element of some regional suits as the Falleras Valencian or the flamenco Andalusian.
Measurements: 27 cm high (18 cm. without comb) x 28 cm wide.
We do not allow any refund for this article; we only allow an exchange for another model.
